National Lifeguard Recertification

The National Lifeguard recertification exam is your opportunity to demonstrate your skills and recertify your certificate. You are responsible for reviewing the required content and skills and preparing yourself for the exam. Your exam is based on the National Lifeguard Award curriculum. Updates to this curriculum may be obtained from your local YMCA Aquatics Coordinator and/or from the Quebec Lifesaving Society.

AGE
16 years+

PREREQUISITE
National Lifeguard certification dating NO MORE than 48 months from certification/re-certificaiton date. (While one may re-certify a National Lifeguard certification that has expired (NLS certifications are valid for 24 months) within the above time frame, one may work as a lifeguard ONLY with a valid certification.)

EVALUATION AND CERTIFICATION
Students must attend a minimum of 90% of class hours. If a student plans on not fully attending a course while still meeting the required minimum attendance percentage, they must inform the instructor and are responsible for catching up on any material missed during their absence.
Students are evaluated by a certified Lifesaving Instructor and Lifesaving Examiner. Certification is awarded upon successful completion of in-class evaluations and of the practical exam, and is valid for 24 months.

CERTIFICATION
It is valid for 2 years if used for work purposes, or 4 years if not employed as a lifeguard.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION
Lifeguards who wish to continue working in an aquatic facility must have their National Lifeguard certification updated every 2 years by taking the recertification exam, which lasts last 4 hours and 30 minutes.
