To take the Functional Training for Aging Adults course, you must have completed a Basic Theory course and hold a YMCA Personal Trainer certification, Group Fitness certification or Aquafitness Fitness certification.
This course is suitable for personal trainers, small group instructors, group fitness instructors and aquatics instructors who want to work with older adults. Learn about the physiological changes associated with aging as well as some common medical conditions and how these may impact exercise selections and prescriptions.
Training content
OLDER ADULTS (Provincial certification - Québec)
Theory (10 hours of virtual classes):
- Fitness and aging;
- Benefits of physical activity;
- Obstacles to physical activity;
- Working with older adults;
- Components of the workout.
Practical (14 hours of virtual classes):
- Warm-up;
- Cardiovascular component;
- Muscular component;
- Stretching and relaxation exercises;
- Progressions and regressions.
Students must complete and submit a case study at the end of the course.
Participants must hold a valid Heartsaver® CPR AED with Child Module or with Child & Infant Modules certification in order to obtain their Functional Training for Aging Adults Certification.
